The Sisterhood's Mulled Wine for Winter Adventures Recipe

A sunny day in winter lures you outside, so it's important to have a warm up strategy when you decide to come back in.

In the winter some days you lack the motivation to get out in the cold, but when the sun comes shining in you can't deny the desire to go out and adventure. As a southern woman I feel your pain if you are just not a winter person and that's why I want to share with you one of my prime motivators for getting out there and being active even when the weather disagrees.

Mulled Wine is responsible for turning this summer lover into a winter wonderer.

Yes, you read correctly.....Mulled Wine. Mulled wine has given me nostalgia for the winter months that I never thought was possible.

The History of Mulled Wine

Mulled wine dates back to the 2nd century when the Roman was out conquering different areas of Europe. They would heat up their wine and blend different aromatic spices in to help fight the bitter cold and diseases. It became increasingly popular as the years went especially when water became to dirty to drink, for instance during the years of the Black Plague. By incorporating spices like cinnamon, cloves and cardamom they were also able to unknowingly boost the immune system to help people overcome sickness. Mulled wine is a perfect winter drink this year as we are trying to boost our immune systems!

The Sisterhood Mulled Wine Recipe

Don't worry if you don't have the perfect ingredients. Don't be afraid to make this recipe your own.

We know its after Christmas but we still have two more months of winter weather, we need more than our husbands to help get us through the cold nights.


1 bottle of red wine

1/3 cup of a sweetener of your choice (I like to make it different each time. try maple syrup, honey or brown sugar)

2 sticks of cinnamon

1 orange

8 whole cloves

1/3 cup of brandy or port (optional, but trust me you won't regret it if you do!)

3-4 cardamom pods

cheesecloth (optional but highly recommended)


Step 1: Simmer the wine in a medium saucepan. Be sure not to boil because you want to keep it as boozy as possible. Also add your sweetener and let dissolve completely before adding other ingredients.

Step 2: Bruise cardamom pods and make a spice bundle in cheesecloth. This is optional but if I'm being honest who wants to spend the time carefully ladling out each spice? Put bundle or if you did not bundle put all spices in the pot.

Step 3: Slice half the orange for garnish. Squeeze the other half in the pot and add zest to the pot if you prefer.

Step 4: Add your brandy or port.

Step 5: Simmer for 20-30 min. You can also make ahead of time and heat up. You can control your spice level by leaving the spice bundle in as long as you prefer.

Step 6: Warm up by ladling a nice mug full of mulled wine. Garnish with an orange slice and cinnamon stick.

I love to make this recipe ahead of time on winter days I know we are going to go outside and ski or participate in other winter sports so it is immediately ready when I get inside. While I am heating the kids up some hot chocolate, mommy has her own warm and cozy beverage!
